How to deal with estate planning as an elderly person

On Behalf of | Jul 28, 2025 | Estate Planning

Getting older brings a fresh sense of urgency to decisions that once felt far off. One of the most important is making sure your affairs are in order so your family knows what to do if something happens to you.

It is prudent to understand that estate planning is not just about money. It is about peace of mind and making sure your wishes are respected.

Take stock of what you own and owe

Start by making a list of everything you have. Include your home, savings, retirement accounts, vehicles and personal items that matter to you. Also, remember to write down any loans or bills you still need to pay.

Write a simple will

A will lets you decide who should inherit your estate in the event you pass on. It also names someone you trust to carry out your instructions, and if you have children or dependents, this is where you can name a guardian. Without a will, the state decides how everything is handled, which may not match with your wishes.

Consider a trust if you need more flexibility

A trust allows your chosen person to manage your property without going through a lengthy court process. It can also be helpful if you have out-of-state property or family members with special needs, since it gives you more control and helps keep things private.

Choose someone to handle health and financial decisions

If you cannot make decisions yourself one day, someone will need to step in and act according to your wishes. Decide now who that person should be and choose a relative or close friend who understands your values. You will need to fill out documents that clearly say who they are and what they can do.

Keep your plan updated

Life changes, and your estate plan should change with it. Set a reminder to review your documents every year or after major life events like a move, a loss or a new grandchild.

If you feel unsure about any part of the process, it is a good idea to seek professional legal guidance. This gives you the confidence that your plan is complete and built to match your personal goals.
